AS GOOD AS GOD LOVES THEM
A bleak one-act plague drama inspired by the events in Eyam. In a remote Derbyshire village in post-Civil War England, plague has inexplicably broken out. In order to prevent the disease spreading, the villagers quarantine themselves from the rest of the county. At the village boundary, a watchman sits to ensure nothing gets in and no one gets out. Then, a stranger arrives…

A story about how long hope can endure, when everything around it is dying.

PEELE
Male. Late 20’s/Early 30’s. Southern. The village rector and its moral leader, relatively new to the parish - within his first 2 years. It was he who instituted the quarantine and his word enforces it – and he feels the weight and guilt of the loss and desperation that has resulted. There is a perhaps a degree of naivety in him, has grown up with the belief the universe bends towards the good. Bad times end. God is always with us, even when we can’t see him. This period is a test to that belief. He is not sleeping. Not eating. And finds himself increasingly isolated from his parishioners. Exhausted – physically, mentally and spiritually.
