CASTING CALL – WAY TO GO’ SHORT FILM

Description

PRODUCTION:
A dark comedy short film

LOGLINE:
Five friends sit around a campfire when one asks how they would want to die. By the end of the night, the reason they are really out there becomes clear

ROLE 1: MAREK
Male, 30s, Polish accent, broken-english
Look & physicality: Odd, but he owns it. Voice theatrical and loud; the body's awkward
Who he is: Fond of himself but a genuinely good guy underneath
Function: The entertainer and tension- releaser.
Grief: Misses Barry too; the performance is how he avoids it.
What's needed: Strong comic and physical timing; big and theatrical without cartoon. Accent carries the jokes, and land the eulogy: stupid and moving at once. Comfortable improvising within the group.

ROLE 2: FREDRIC
Male, late 20s, white, RP / mixed London. Look & physicality: Quietly confident, still, matter-of-fact.
Who he is: Says what he means and means no harm by it. A proper thinker rather than a feeler. Over-explains when he's nervous.
Function: The truth seeker.
Grief: Feels with his brain. Asks questions and derives meaning.
What's needed: An actor who can play restraint and come across as genuine. Comfortable improvising within the group.

ROLE 3: AMA
Female, 30s, Ghanaian. Still Ghanaian accent.
Look & physicality: Body language reads a little apart from the circle, self-contained. Everything's in the reactions.
Who she is: Firm beliefs, strong opinions that are hardly spoken. Superstitious; not her idea of a good time.
Function: The emotional.
Grief: Her discomfort is the grief and her cultural lack of ability to verbalise it or speak about death in the flippant way the others can.
What's needed: Needs to read
as the hardest role. Her reactions carry some of the comedy, and she also has to land the film's two most important lines

ROLE 4: SOPHIE
Female, 20s, White. Perhaps Northern? Not too fussed.
Look & physicality: Very comfortable in herself, maybe too comfortable. Loose, unbothered; wanders off and drifts back in.
on.
Who she is: Blunt, a bit crass, entirely at ease.
Function: The embodiment of life goes
The character who seems least invested but secretly the organiser of the wake.
Grief: Avoids stillness so the grief does not settle.
What's needed: Deadpan timing and total ease on camera

ROLE 5: ARJUN
Male, late 20s, Indian. Indian accent.
Look & physicality: Young man, with an inviting smile.
Who he is: Strangely optimistic; finds it easy to laugh, all-in on whatever's happening, does the Indian-family bits like everyone round the fire grew up the same as him.
Function: Finds the hopeful angle and genuinely means it.
Grief: Bright-siding keeps the night light. Considers this group his "found family'.
What's needed: Needs to read as sincere; he's not being ironic.
