Period Trial Drama – “DEVILL” | UWE Bristol Student Short Film

A second-year student production is seeking voluntary performers for a historical courtroom drama set in 16th-century North Wales.

Project Overview
“DEVILL” follows Gwen ferch Ellis, a healer whose knowledge of herbal medicine places her outside the control of church and law. As fear and superstition spread through her community, she becomes the target of accusation, exposing a justice system driven more by hysteria and power than truth.

Roles

Gwen Elis (42)
A Welsh healer whose independence provokes fear, placing her at the centre of the witchcraft accusations.

Jane Conway (20)
A young woman who betrays Gwen in order to survive, shaped by coercion and fear.

Thomas Mostyn (25–40)
An ambitious politician who weaponises law and religion to consolidate power.

Elin Richard (60)
A grieving neighbour who channels personal loss into accusation.

Robert (25–30)
A young sheriff, impressionable and eager to please authority.

Bishop of St. Asaph (40–65)
A religious authority who legitimises Gwen’s condemnation.

Lewis Richard (20)
Elin’s frail son, whose illness becomes the catalyst for suspicion and blame.
